JAKARTA, KalderaNews.com – The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) continues to expand Indonesia’s global research footprint through strategic diplomacy.
Minister Brian Yuliarto officially received the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Indonesia, Faisal Abdullah Al-Amoudi, at the ministry headquarters on Tuesday (11/8).

The bilateral meeting focused on strengthening concrete university-to-university collaborations, establishing joint research initiatives, and broadening student exchange programs between higher education institutions in both nations.
Joint Research Scheme: Co-Funding for High-Impact Outcomes
A key priority highlighted by Minister Brian Yuliarto is the creation of a balanced research scheme that directly enhances the academic capacity of both countries.
He proposed a co-funded joint research model where professors from Indonesia and Saudi Arabia collaborate on unified projects supported by their respective national funding bodies.
“I will propose several programs, such as joint research initiatives, so that professors from Saudi Arabia and Indonesia can conduct research together. Funding from our side will support our professors, and funding from your side will support yours, but they must work together. This will be very beneficial,” stated Minister Brian Yuliarto.
To turn this vision into reality, the ministry has identified 11 Indonesian universities ready to pair with top-tier Saudi Arabian institutions for immediate, concrete academic projects.
Boosting Student Mobility and International Academic Access
Beyond advanced research, both nations agreed to expand student mobility options through visiting student and exchange student schemes:
- Opportunities for Saudi Students in Indonesia: Saudi students will have avenues to study at Indonesian universities, particularly through English-taught degree and exchange programs.
- Diversifying Academic Fields for Indonesian Students: Indonesian students are encouraged to explore broader disciplines in Saudi Arabia, expanding beyond traditional Islamic studies into fields like science, technology, engineering, and digital innovation.
Leveraging Saudi Arabia’s Expertise in Digital Education
From the Saudi side, Ambassador Faisal Abdullah Al-Amoudi reiterated his country’s strong commitment to deepening educational ties, with a special emphasis on digital education.
“We want to strengthen and enhance cooperation in education, particularly digital education. We hope to share the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s experience as a model that can be implemented in Indonesia,” remarked Ambassador Faisal Abdullah Al-Amoudi.
Saudi Arabia’s successful digital transformation in education offers valuable insights for Indonesia as it continues to upgrade its digital learning infrastructure and remote education capabilities across campuses.
Fostering Impactful Higher Education
In line with the ministry’s vision of Impactful Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Diktisaintek Berdampak), this partnership is designed to move beyond formal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).
By delivering tangible academic programs, applied research, and sustainable human resource development, the Indonesia–Saudi Arabia alliance empowers lecturers, researchers, and students to build robust global networks that contribute directly to national development.
