Concurrently, the Goethe-Institut Indonesien initiated the Southeast Asian Competence Center for Skilled Labor Migration to Germany (KSM) in Bandung.

The synergy between these two programs was further solidified with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between GIZ and the Goethe-Institut Indonesien.

The event commenced with a high-level dialogue at the Hilton Hotel Bandung, featuring Ina Lepel, German Ambassador to Indonesia, and Abdul Kadir Karding, Minister of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI).

The discussions focused on joint efforts to equip Indonesian youth with skills relevant to the global workforce while ensuring safe, fair, and mutually beneficial labor mobility for all parties.

Ambassador Lepel emphasized the potential for a strong partnership, stating, “Germany’s demographic challenges and Indonesia’s young and skilled workforce open up opportunities to create a robust partnership based on mutual respect, shared responsibility, and common goals.”

“Today marks an important milestone in our joint commitment to creating fair, transparent, and safe opportunities for labor mobility between Germany and Indonesia and further increasing benefits for both sides,” he added.

Minister Karding underscored the shared responsibility in improving the quality of life and protection of Indonesian migrant workers, ensuring their rights are well-protected.

He highlighted the importance of cross-country collaboration for stronger, well-connected nations, ready to face future opportunities and challenges.

He also affirmed the importance of respectful and transparent partnerships and the active role of all parties, including prospective migrant workers, in creating safe, fair, and dignified working conditions.

Minister Karding encouraged skilled young Indonesians to seek employment in Germany or other European countries through safe and protected migration channels.

KP2MI is committed to optimizing the placement of Indonesian migrant workers in skilled and professional sectors across various European countries, aligning with the directive of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to increase Indonesian labor absorption outside the ASEAN and Asian regions.

Following the dialogue, the MOVE-ID centers in Bandung and Mataram were officially inaugurated. MOVE-ID is part of the global Migration and Development Centers (ZME) program, implemented by GIZ on behalf of BMZ.

In collaboration with KP2MI, MOVE-ID provides consultation services for individuals interested in regular labor migration to Germany, Europe, or within Asia and Southeast Asia, as well as for those returning to Indonesia who require social and economic reintegration support. These consultations empower individuals to make informed decisions about migration based on adequate information.

Hans-Ludwig Bruns, Director of GIZ for Indonesia & ASEAN, stated, “In order to maximize the benefits of migration for sustainable development and minimize potential risks, MOVE-ID is determined to provide reliable services throughout Indonesia by building a strong network involving local partners, civil society organizations, business associations, and multilateral organizations.

GIZ is proud to continue cooperation on the basis of a long-term partnership between Indonesia and Germany”.

At Grha Kompas Bandung, the KSM initiated by the Goethe-Institut Indonesien was also inaugurated. KSM will coordinate all skilled labor-related activities in Southeast Asia from its Bandung location, offering reliable support to partners throughout the migration process for skilled workers and trainees heading to Germany.

Activities include language courses, curriculum development, and information sessions.

Constanze Michel, Regional Director of the Goethe-Institut for Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, explained, “Through KSM, the Goethe-Institut offers trusted support for people in Indonesia who wish to pursue a professional future in Germany with transparent and easily accessible services, such as language courses, intercultural preparation, and career guidance”.

Through these newly established joint structures in Indonesia, formalized by the MoU between GIZ and Goethe-Institut, MOVE-ID and KSM will provide complementary services to address various aspects of migration needs.

This partnership reinforces successful German-Indonesian initiatives in skilled labor migration and reflects a shared commitment to building a more resilient and inclusive global workforce by promoting safe, fair, and well-managed labor migration.
