MATARAM, KalderaNews.com – The search for Brazilian Mount Rinjani hiker Juliana De Souza Pereira Marins (26) has ended tragically. Basarnas Chief Air Marshal Mohammad Syafii confirmed that Juliana has passed away after a joint SAR team successfully reached her body at the bottom of a 600-meter ravine on Tuesday night (June 24).
This somber news comes amidst massive pleas from Brazilian netizens who flooded the social media accounts of President Prabowo Subianto and Indonesian media, urging for a swift rescue.
The SAR team, consisting of seven rescuers, began their arduous descent into the ravine at 4:52 PM WITA. After reaching a depth of 400 meters, the team continued their movement until 6:00 PM WITA, finally reaching the victim’s position at 600 meters.

“A victim inspection was carried out, and no signs of life were found,” Syafii stated, confirming Juliana’s deceased condition.
The incident began on Saturday (June 21) at approximately 6:30 AM WITA, when Juliana, who was hiking with a guide and five others, fell from a cliff in the Cemara Tunggal area, a path leading to Rinjani’s summit, after the weather suddenly deteriorated.
The victim was located on Monday (June 23) at 7:05 AM WITA, having shifted approximately 500 meters from her initial fall point in an extreme terrain of sand and rock.
Evacuation efforts faced severe challenges due to the steep terrain, strong winds, and rapidly changing thick fog. Two rescuers initially descended, but their access to the victim was blocked by two large overhangs on the steep cliff.
Thermal drone visuals from Basarnas Mataram detected Juliana’s body caught on a rock face in an immobile position, prompting a plan for a vertical evacuation.
Given the unfavorable weather conditions and limited visibility on Tuesday night, the evacuation of Juliana’s body will now be carried out on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 6:00 AM WITA, using a lifting method. Once successfully recovered, the body will be evacuated along the hiking trail to Sembalun Post by stretcher, before being transported by helicopter to Bhayangkara Regional Police Hospital in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
Meanwhile, on social media, “SOS Juliana” pleas inundated the comment sections of President Prabowo Subianto’s Instagram account, with even Prabowo’s post at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2025 becoming a primary target.
Brazilian netizens like @mariiacecil** and @arianemri** implored Prabowo to help Juliana, believing she was still alive and in need of immediate assistance. “HELP!!! RESCUE JULIANA,” @maittediniz, “AJUDEM A JULIANA,” @Thamiresgimenez and “SOS Juliana,” @arianemribeiro
Responding to these urgent calls, Deputy State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro stated that President Prabowo was monitoring Juliana’s case and assured that all reports would be verified and assistance provided.
The Ministry of Tourism expressed deep concern over the accident, emphasizing tourist safety as a top priority. They have ordered stronger Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for mountain climbing and increased supervision of guiding services in extreme destinations like Rinjani.
This tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent risks of mountaineering and the challenges of rescue operations in extreme terrain.
