JAKARTA, KalderaNews.com– European Union (EU) Ambassador to ASEAN, Sujiro Seam, emphasized that the participation of several ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, in the BRICS economic bloc will not affect the existing cooperation between the EU and ASEAN.
On the contrary, Ambassador Seam stated that the involvement of ASEAN countries in BRICS only strengthens the relevance of the strategic partnership between the two sides.
“With the rise of the Global South through BRICS, it becomes even more relevant to strengthen the partnership between the European Union and ASEAN,” Seam said during an EU media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

He further explained that the current global dynamics encourage the EU to partner with all parties worldwide, including ASEAN countries, through the “Global Europe” cooperation framework at both regional and international levels.
“The involvement of ASEAN in BRICS opens up greater opportunities for the EU to strengthen ties with Global South countries,” he added.
Seam highlighted that the EU-ASEAN strategic partnership is grounded in a joint statement from the leaders of both organizations, along with an action plan that governs its implementation.
“The participation of individual ASEAN countries in any international organization will not affect the commitments already agreed upon,” he stressed.
He also noted that the relationship and cooperation between the EU and ASEAN in implementing the strategic partnership would remain unchanged, despite the new BRICS membership of some ASEAN countries.
Indonesia, which officially became a BRICS member on January 6, 2025, along with Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand, reaffirmed its commitment to actively contribute to the organization’s agenda for global peace and prosperity.
