YOGYAKARTA, KalderaNews.com – A major gathering of higher education leaders across ASEAN in Yogyakarta has drawn sharp attention.

During the Passage to ASEAN (P2A) 9th Annual General Meeting (AGM), delegates from nine countries and 140 universities collaboratively formulated strategies to ensure the Southeast Asian region is not left behind in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution.

It is no secret that the AI transformation is projected to contribute up to US$1 trillion (equivalent to approximately Rp15 thousand trillion) to the ASEAN economy.

This fantastic figure is like a treasure trove, but the potential for profit is threatened by a serious obstacle: the AI Gap and the widening disparity in technological capacity among member states.

Indonesian Vice Minister: Don’t Just Be Consumers!

Indonesia’s Vice Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Stella Christie, frankly highlighted this danger. She asserted that ASEAN must immediately transform from being merely a consumer of technology to a producer of innovation.

“The AI gap remains a real challenge in the region. Higher education plays a strategic role in bridging that gap through research, collaboration, and strengthening institutional capacity,” she emphasized.

The event, hosted by the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII), was more than just an ordinary meeting. Amid intensive discussions, the meeting produced concrete steps to address the threat.

Key Decision: The Birth of the ASEAN AI Council

For the first time, the P2A forum pushed for the establishment of the ASEAN Artificial Intelligence Council and the development of the Roadmap P2A 2026. These two initiatives aim to harmonize regional strategies, strengthen student mobility, and ensure that the higher education system can integrate AI inclusively and evenly.

Wiryono Raharjo, Vice Rector of UII, stressed that cross-country collaboration is the key to building an adaptive and competitive future for higher education in the AI era.

With support from the ASEAN Secretariat and industry giants such as Microsoft Indonesia and the Samsung R&D Institute, the P2A 9th AGM serves as a strategic momentum. The goal is clear: to capture the US$1 trillion opportunity from AI, but without leaving any country behind.
