JAKARTA, KalderaNews.com – A new agreement signed on Thursday, August 21, 2025, marks a major expansion of the ongoing collaboration between Indonesia and Germany. The partnership, aimed at facilitating skilled worker mobility, will now integrate German language education into nursing programs at four additional Indonesian polytechnic colleges.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the Health Polytechnic of Jakarta III by the Goethe-Institut and Indonesia’s Ministry of Health. This is the third phase of an initiative that began in 2023, and it will now include institutions in Tasikmalaya, Semarang, East Kalimantan, and Bengkulu.
The signing ceremony took place during a visit by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who was in Indonesia as part of a diplomatic delegation. During his visit to the Health Polytechnic of Jakarta III, one of the pilot schools for the program, he met with Indonesian Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin. The two ministers interacted with students, observed practical nursing training, and visited a pre-integration course.

“We want to intensify our efforts to support skilled workers coming to Germany, especially in the healthcare sector,” Minister Wadephul said. “Expanding the cooperation between the Goethe-Institut and Indonesia’s Ministry of Health is a significant step toward this goal. It shows what can be done when theory, practical skills, and language training synergize—a win for both countries.”
The expanded program, which includes institutions in Jakarta III, Bandung, Medan, and Maluku, aims to prepare Indonesian nursing students for professional careers in Germany.
The curriculum, developed with German expert support, focuses on providing students with the language and intercultural skills needed to thrive abroad. Starting in July 2026, the Goethe-Institut will begin training staff and developing a language syllabus for the new partner schools.
Indonesian Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin previously stated in September 2024 that the initiative aims to provide better job opportunities and high-quality education for Indonesian nursing graduates.
“This cooperation is not only about the relationship between Indonesia and Germany, but also a testament to the excellent skills of Indonesian nurses,” he said.
Constanze Michel, Regional Director for the Goethe-Institut, highlighted the program’s goal of empowering young people to pursue their own migration paths. “We want them to not only integrate into a new society but also to participate actively,” she said.
