JAKARTA, KalderaNews.com – The sixth edition of The Week of Indonesia–Netherlands Education and Research (WINNER) 2025 concluded with resounding success in Jakarta, firmly cementing the strategic and historic partnership between the two nations.

WINNER 2025 successfully completed its full agenda from October 7–9, taking place in Jakarta and Bogor, with all sessions effectively livestreamed via RingCentral. The program featured the opening ceremony hosted by BRIN and the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, a comprehensive second day at IPB University in Bogor, and concluded with a celebratory closing event at the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta.

Under the theme, “Building a Sustainable Future through Education and Research,” the event was lauded by officials from both countries as a crucial and highly effective platform for addressing pressing global challenges, ranging from climate change and global health crises to food and energy security.

The consensus among leaders was clear: no single nation can solve these complex issues alone, making deep-rooted international collaboration indispensable.

Partnership Moves from Paper to Practice

The Head of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Laksana Tri Handoko, highlighted the practical success of the longstanding relationship.

“For the last five editions, it has been proven that Indonesia and the Netherlands are not just partners on paper, but in practice,” Handoko stated, adding that research and education are “central” to creating innovative and sustainable solutions.

He noted that the cooperation, which has flourished across fields such as agriculture, maritime studies, and health, is essential for translating scientific knowledge into tangible societal benefits. “Science must reach the community, improve welfare, and protect our planet,” he added.

The success of the academic bridge-building was quantified by Indonesian Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, who confirmed there are currently 159 active University-to-University (U2U) cooperation documents between institutions in Indonesia and the Netherlands.

Aligned with Impact and Global Goals

The event’s theme was directly aligned with Indonesia’s new policy emphasis, “Diktisaintek Berdampak” (Impactful Higher Education, Science, and Technology), which champions the role of higher education in driving economic growth, social transformation, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“WINNER has become a platform for collaboration that started at the government level and expanded to the technical realm,” Minister Yuliarto noted, stressing the need for the education sector to operate beyond academic confines and become a key global ecosystem player.

Echoing this sentiment, Dutch Minister of Education, Culture, and Science, Gouke Moes, praised WINNER as an “important platform” for bringing together cross-disciplinary researchers and fostering new ideas over the past six years.

Moes underscored the importance of an open, cooperative mindset, stating, “As knowledge is boundless, so must those who seek it be open and cooperative.”

Concrete Outcomes and Mutual Respect

The collaborative spirit has led to concrete, high-impact projects. These include joint research funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Indonesian Ministry.

Furthermore, the partnership showcases mutual respect through cooperation on sensitive historical and scientific topics, such as the collaborative research on colonial-era collections and the symbolic return of the Dubois Collection to Indonesia, marking a strong foundation of shared heritage.

By successfully fostering over a hundred institutional partnerships and dedicating its focus to creating a sustainable future, WINNER 2025 has not only strengthened the historical bonds between Indonesia and the Netherlands but has also positioned the educational and research alliance as a powerful force for global innovation.

The event’s success confirms the enduring commitment of both countries to leverage science and education as central pillars for a more sustainable and resilient world.
