Each year, the EU offers Erasmus+ scholarships to Indonesian students and lecturers who wish to pursue their Master’s or undertake short-term exchanges in Europe. Between 2004 to 2022, the EU awarded Erasmus+ scholarships to more than 2,300 Indonesian students and lecturers.

Annually, around 1,200 scholarships are provided to Indonesian students and scholars by the EU – through its flagship Erasmus+ programme – and by the EU Member States. More than 4,000 students and scholars depart to study in Europe every year, both self-funded students and with scholarships.

The EU Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Vincent Piket congratulated the awardees in an official pre-departure event.

“Europe is home to world-class education and a research ecosystem. It knows the needs of the labour market and prepares young people for national and international careers. In business, in science, in government. We are proud to contribute to Indonesia’s future through the Erasmus+ scholarship,” said Piket.

Erasmus+ awardees are future leaders who will drive positive changes in their fields of expertise, contributing to a greener, more inclusive and digital future.

“In an increasingly interconnected world, Erasmus+ awardees play a key role in building greater cooperation and strengthening people-to-people connections between Europe and Indonesia.”

In his opening remarks, the Director General of Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia (MoECRT), Prof. Nizam said, “I would like to congratulate all students who have been awarded the Erasmus+ scholarship. Erasmus+ is an excellent programme by the EU that provides students with the opportunity to study and live in two or more universities in the EU Member States.”

“This is a great experience to build students’ knowledge, skills and international network. I hope the friendship and collaboration between the EU and Indonesia will become even stronger in the future.”

On this occasion, the Director General of Higher Education, MoECRT also said that this year, through the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) with funding from the Government of Indonesia’s Education Endowment Fund (LPDP), the Ministry of Education and Culture sent 438 Indonesian students to 21 universities across 11 European Union Member States.

Dimastyaji Yusron Nurseta, an Erasmus+ awardee who will study Sustainable Biomass and Bioproducts Engineering expressed his excitement, “Europe’s advanced research ecosystem and its focus on sustainability issues fascinate me. Being awarded the Erasmus+ scholarship is a dream come true as I wish to explore bioproduct processing in Europe to contribute to sustainable utilisation of renewable resources in Indonesia.”

In the pre-departure event, the Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association (EMA) Indonesia, an official organisation of Erasmus+ alumni in Indonesia, delivered an introduction about EMA Indonesia and a sharing session for awardees to be more prepared prior to their Erasmus+ studies.

Country Representative of EMA Indonesia, Dwi Fitriah Arrisandi, shared that EMA Indonesia focuses on promoting higher education opportunities to prospective students in Indonesia, particularly those living outside big-city areas, and empowering Erasmus+ alumni through professional networks and knowledge-sharing events.

As Indonesian Erasmus+ alumni work in diverse sectors at different career levels, EMA Indonesia is keen to accommodate potential collaboration among Erasmus+ alumni and establish project collaboration between sectors.

Erasmus+ scholarship is a fully-funded programme that offers a unique mobility experience of studying in multiple EU universities. Fitriani Tresnaputri, an EMJM awardee, is thrilled to pursue her master’s degree in Advanced Materials Science and Engineering (AMASE) with the Erasmus+ scholarship.

“Europe is home to technology and research, therefore I wish to explore various research related to the implementation of materials science and engineering in the aviation industry in Europe, exchange knowledge, and continue raising the bar higher for aircraft materials and processes in Indonesia’s aviation industry,” said Fitriani.
