JAKARTA, KalderaNews.com – The future of education and research collaboration between Europe and Southeast Asia is brighter than ever, following the EU-ASEAN Scholarships Information Day 2025.
Hosted today by the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to ASEAN, the hybrid event was a central platform for strengthening academic cooperation and highlighting a wealth of study and research opportunities across Europe for ASEAN students and scholars.
The event, which attracted over 800 participants from across the region—including students, university representatives, alumni, and education stakeholders—offered a comprehensive look at scholarship programmes provided by institutions in both ASEAN and the EU.

Attendees engaged in thematic information sessions, explored opportunities at a dedicated exhibition with scholarship providers, and consulted directly with programme alumni.
A Commitment to People-to-People Exchange
Sujiro Seam, the EU Ambassador to ASEAN, underscored the event’s significance: “This event highlights the European Union’s commitment to promoting people-to-people connectivity between the EU and ASEAN, which is crucial for building mutual understanding and tackling shared global challenges.”
“I hope ASEAN students and scholars will take full advantage of this event and the diverse scholarship and research opportunities.”
The EU’s investment in academic mobility has already made a substantial impact. Since 2014, the EU-funded Erasmus+ programme has supported more than 15,000 students and scholars from ASEAN for short-term study, master’s degrees, teaching, or training.
Additionally, 7,500 European students and scholars have engaged in similar exchanges across ASEAN. Furthermore, individual EU Member States continue to offer a broad range of supplementary scholarships to students from the regio
Flagship Research Funding Bolsters Collaboration
Beyond academic scholarships, the EU is significantly investing in joint research. Between 2021 and 2024, the EU awarded 90 grants under its flagship research and innovation programme, Horizon Europe, supporting 109 institutions across ASEAN with a total EU contribution of €10.6 million.
Education and research remain core pillars of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, which is dedicated to building sustainable and trusted connections with partners worldwide.
